Mark C. Campbell studied architecture and art at the University of Virginia, graduating with the AIA gold medal in 1977. While working as a designer and architectural renderer, he experimented in mediums of paper, plastic, photo montage, and computer generated imagery, and taught art as his side passion. The “Great Recession” provided Mark the opportunity to pursue art and music full time since 2009.

Raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Mark still enjoys the rivers, mountains and shorelines of the state, traveling, observing, and sketching, specializing in water scenes with a wide angle view.

Neither a photorealist nor a pure plein air painter, he admires the works of Hopper, with his strong light and architecture, and Monet, with his magical natural light. The great architect Lou Kahn, while lecturing at the University of Virginia, said "But... light is the most important thing." Mark’s artistic joy comes from creating his own space on the canvas and illuminating that space.

Mark paints the light.
