Artist’s Statement

As an artist, I find my self in the role of both student and teacher.  I am a student in that I find myself influenced by other painters. The more time I spend seeking out other artists who are making new and exciting discoveries, the more I find my own work resonating with the things that I believe are important.

As a teacher, I am empowered solely inasmuch as I am able to inspire others. Not only do I want people to be inspired by my paintings, but also to be inspired by the works of others, as well. The creative process of painting begins in the observer who recognizes that the elements of art, line, color, texture and shape are mere abstractions that function as a relative code within a context created by the artist

That being said, my paintings are about the exaggeration of color, as well as the substitutions of colors that may share equal value in the light spectrum.  My paintings are also about texture, both real and implied.  My most recent body of work has been done with a palette knife.  This process not only involves a painter directly with texture but also involves an awareness of lines that are created in the juxtaposition of colors and shapes.  The most successful painters are the artists who invite the audience to become a part of the creative process of interpretation.  My goal in each painting is to strike a feeling in the viewer with a summation of energies that I derive by being both teacher and artist.
